What Data Does Roblox Collect from Children?

Roblox collects extensive personal information from its users, including children under 13: geolocation data (IP address, device GPS), chat logs and private messages, behavioral analytics (play patterns, engagement metrics, time spent), device identifiers and hardware information, account profile information, transaction and spending history, social graph data (friend lists, communication patterns), and biometric-adjacent data from voice chat features.

COPPA Violations

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act requires platforms that collect data from children under 13 to provide clear privacy notices to parents, obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information, allow parents to review and delete their children's data, and maintain reasonable data security practices. The FTC investigation found that Roblox's self-reported age verification system was trivially bypassed, meaning the platform collected data from millions of children under 13 without the required parental consent.

How Roblox Monetizes Children's Data

Roblox uses children's behavioral data to optimize engagement algorithms, target in-game purchase opportunities at moments of maximum psychological vulnerability, serve personalized content designed to extend session length, and inform advertising and monetization strategies. This data-driven optimization of child engagement is the core of Roblox's business model — and it operates on personal information collected in violation of federal law.

State-Level Privacy Claims

Beyond federal COPPA claims, families may have additional claims under state privacy laws: the California CCPA/CPRA (California Consumer Privacy Act), the Illinois BIPA (Biometric Information Privacy Act) for voice chat data, the Texas SCOPE Act (Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment), and general state consumer protection statutes that prohibit deceptive data collection practices.

Roblox Virtual Gambling and Loot Boxes

Roblox Parental Notification Failure

Roblox's parental control and notification systems are inadequate by design. Age verification relies on easily falsified self-reported birth dates, default settings maximize engagement rather than safety, and parents are not adequately notified of their children's activities, contacts, or spending on the platform.
